2010 ADAS 609.3 Spacing of Grab Bars

The space between the wall and the grab bar shall be 1 1/2 inches. The space between the grab bar and projecting objects below and at the ends shall be 1 1/2 inches minimum. The space between the grab bar and projecting objects above shall be 12 inches minimum.

EXCEPTION: The space between the grab bars and shower controls, shower fittings, and other grab bars above shall be permitted to be 1 1/2 inches minimum.

Citation according to 2010 ADAS. Check your state’s accessibility laws. Some states such as California, Georgia and Florida have additional requirements and standards.
